what happens to us as we read a novel?
orhan pamuk war heute an der uni. ich war da, und sein vortrag hat mich wirklich begeistert. einmal wollte ich einen dozenten haben, der einen fesselt, wenn er spricht: voilá! beantwortet hat er die frage oben in neun punkten:
one - we observe the story, motives, ideas, purposes
two - we transform words into images; words become a landscape
"we depart from words and dive into atmosphere - we as the reader complete the story by entering it's landscape through a windowframe. we slowly drown in a new world that reveals itself word by word, sentence by sentence. we start to walk among the shadows of mood beyond the words we're reading."
three - we wonder: what's real experience, what's fiction?
"here we have the logical paradox between the naive reader who loses himself in the text without ever questioning and his sentimental curiosity which longs to reflect about the authors techniques."
four - we ask: is reality like this? is this story conform with what we know?
"though we are in the novel, we compare our perceptions there to those from our real world."
five - we assess, take pleasure of the secret music of the prose
six - we make ethical judgments; first about the characters, then about the author
"proposal to the readers: during reading, ethics should come out of the novel, not out of ourselves."
seven - we develop our private relationship to the author
"you start to think: this novel was only written for me - which is not the case."
eight - our memory continues to try and keep every detail
"somebody said: a novel should only be so long you can read it in one city. i put it like this: a novel should only be so long that the reader can remember all details."
nine - we search for the secret center of the novel
"this is the most frequent action of mind while reading. we are convinced there is a central meaning behind, something that tells us about the secrets of life."
